Lanta Animal Welfare’s Ao Nang Sterilization Clinic

The principal aim of the Lanta Animal Welfare’s Ao Nang Sterilization Clinic initiative is humane control of the dog and cat populations in Ao Nang through sterilization, and infectious disease control by rabies vaccination. Lanta Animal Welfare (LAW) will also provide basic medical care for any sick or injured animals.

Ao Nang is a major tourist area on the mainland in Southern Thailand. There are many private vets but no veterinary service dedicated to the hundreds of stray animals. Over the past 6 months LAW has received numerous dogs from Ao Nang with horrific knife wounds and many tourist reports of sick stray animals. Dogs are resented in the area by local businesses, simply because there are too many, and by residents because of religious beliefs. Sterilization is the only long-term solution. We, in association with Government Livestock Department have placed large notices to deter locals from harming the dogs and inform of our proposed visit.

Funding is needed for the following reasons :

· To continue to improve the welfare of as many cats and dogs as possible through sterilization. Despite LAW’s ongoing education program, in many areas dogs are still disliked due to local religious beliefs and hence can be subject to abuse such as knife wounds, burns and poisoning, unless the dog population can be humanely controlled. Sterilized animals suffer fewer injuries and illnesses resulting in longer, healthier lives.
· To vaccinate as many dogs and cats against Rabies, and reduce the disease threat to the human population of Southern Thailand.

LAW is still the only veterinary centre on Koh Lanta. It is the closest service for the numerous neighbouring islands and some mainland areas. The financial support LAW receives from Time for Lime Cookery School, and donations cover food and medical costs for sick and injured animals at the centre but as LAW’s catchment zone continues to grow every year, it cannot financially support the vital mobile sterilization and vaccination projects desperately required.

The LAW Ao Nang sterilization, vaccination and treatment clinic is targeting a 5-day timeframe during March-May 2017 and estimate to sterilize 150 dogs and 80 cats. We urgently require funding to cover the medical supplies, our travel, accommodation and food expenses during the clinic, totaling 30,000 THB.

Breakdown of 30,000 THB Cost

7,500 Medical supplies
15,000 Travel including flights, fuel, ferry and minivan tickets
5,000 Accommodation for 7 people
2,500 Food for 7 people
