Hello everyone! I am Wipawee Chuamsakul from Thailand. First, I would like to say “THANK YOU” to my family, friends, relatives, referees, colleagues, and students. Because of their love, supports, and wishes, I am inspired to launch this campaign “Final Call for Wipawee to Edinburgh: Your Supports Promote Mental Wellness and Prevent Mental Illness” to pursue MSc Psychology of Mental Health (Conversion) at the University of Edinburgh, Scotland.

I am inspired by my students who have mental health problems. They told me about difficulties in their life and study caused by mental illnesses. These obstruct them from achieving their academic goals. I also found that there have been significant numbers of students confronting mental health difficulties. Therefore, I am passionate about helping them. This leads me to pursue further studies about the psychology of mental health. However, as my previous degrees do not support studying Psychology programs in Thailand, I need to study abroad. Then, I applied for a fully funded scholarship from the UK and two universities. In February 2023, I received rejection letters from the scholarship and one of the two universities. This is not a completely sad story, fortunately, I am so thankful to receive an offer from the University of Edinburgh (UoE). Then, I attempted to seek other funding supports to make the most of this grateful opportunity. Unfortunately, I have not found any source of funding.

Consequently, this is my last chance to turn my story to be “Fortunately!” Your supports mean a lot to me and our society in terms of mental health and wellness as it will help me gain psychological knowledge and insight, complete my degree, and build global networks. These would lead to promote mental wellness in Thailand and offer opportunities for me to provide mental health services in many countries. By supporting my campaign, I hope you feel happy and fulfilled, you will also receive my mental health information updates and services. I am positive that my campaign and the offers will help you, your loved ones and community, and our global society improve mental health and create sustainable mental wellness. Inspiration: My students

I have been a lecturer teaching English for over 4,000 students at Chiang Mai University for more than 6 years. Recent years, I have seen a surge in students struggling with mental health difficulties, reflected in their declining academic performance and self-destructive behaviors. Some of them dropped courses, some received F grades, there were two suicides, and a student attempted suicide while taking exam. With the students’ explicit consent, I collected data, and found that between 2018 and 2021, an average of 20 out of 300 students I taught reported experiencing mental health issues each semester.

Passion: How can I help my students?

I therefore sought to accommodate students by researching and taking courses on mental health support, including ‘A Beginner’s Counselling Psychology’, I was certified with a full score of 60/60. I became better equipped at active listening, observing non-verbal cues, and allowing students to feel heard while offering positive reinforcement. However, I am unqualified to give professional advice to those experiencing depression and anxiety; this limitation has motivated me pursue further studies about the psychology of mental health.

My Vision: Good mental health brings well-being of life

My goal is to promote mental wellness, make mental health services more accessible in Thailand and provide mental health services worldwide. I plan to start by combining my teaching skills I have with psychological knowledge and experience that I will gain to educate and train people to have mental wellness, and provide mental health support within a university environment. By educating and training students, their parents, and teachers, I am confident that all of them will gain mental wellness, and students will be able to live their lives effectively and achieve their goals. Furthermore, I will expand to other sectors, such as local communities, business, entertainment, etc. Besides, I will pursue further study in Clinical Psychology, establish my own mental wellness clinic and foundation in Chiang Mai, Thailand, and launch a free mental health service campaign as some people are struggling to handle with payment for mental health services. In the long run, I hope to support my networks and communities from the UoE, the British Psychological Society, the UK, and Thailand in terms of research and development.

Exploration, Expectation, and Rejections: Master’s degree abroad, scholarship, and universities

I sought master’s degree programs in Psychology in Thailand. Nevertheless, I was not eligible to apply for them as my previous degrees do not relate to Psychology. Next, I searched for studying abroad, and discovered that Psychology conversion program is the way. In terms of finance, studying abroad is struggling for me, a middle-income earner in a developing country. For this reason, in October, last year, I applied for the UK fully funded scholarship, and two universities according to the requirement of the scholarship. Unfortunately, in February, 2023, I received rejection letters from the scholarship and one of the universities. I was hopeless and about to give up.

Light at the end of the tunnel: The University of Edinburgh 

The last one I was waiting for, the last day of the announcement, fortunately, there was the light from the University of Edinburgh, Scotland. I am so thankful to receive an offer to study MSc Psychology of Mental Health (Conversion) with the consideration of my recent GPA – 3.75 as distinction (DIST).

- Confirmed its value and quality by many of my friends who have studied in Scotland and the UK

- Located in Edinburgh, the capital city of Scotland, it is fascinating and attractive for its history, architecture, and scenic places

I believe that it would be one of the best places to open new horizons and enhance me to achieve my goal of study and profession in psychology by rooting profound knowledge and constructing influential networks and communities.

Making the most of the opportunity: attempt, rejections of the requirements, and time limit

As I am unable to prepare my fund on time, and UoE do not provide scholarship for this program; I tried many ways. First, I requested a deferral to study next year for having time to find other scholarships and funds, but the deferral is not allowed. Next, I negotiated the tuition fee, but it is not negotiable, I must pay the full amount £27,100. At the same time, I searched for many scholarships, contacted many organizations, and foundations in Thailand and overseas. Hopelessly, I found that none of them match my field of study and timing, semester 2023/2024 is opening on September 11, 2023!

The rejected requirements, not matching with the previous scholarships, and time limit; I am not waiting around for next year. This is my last chance, I am taking it. Thank you again everyone for sharing and supporting my campaign. Last two weeks, I received direct messages from some of my friends and supporters to follow up about the campaign as its deadline was coming, I greatly appreciate their concern. Also, I am deeply thankful for every kind of support for my campaign.

Now, it is time to close my campaign for this year as its deadline (1 August 2023) has passed (the campaign page still exists but the donation is not allowed via the website). Here is the summary of my campaign. 

- There are 8,647 views, and about 100 shares from my personal Facebook

Although the funds gained from the campaign is far away from the target of the campaign (1,673,480 THB), I am proud of my supporters whose support is invaluable.
