The Story

Solidarity Group, a home-based worker cooperative in Bangkok, has fought for the rights of Thai workers for more than two decades. Its leader Manop is now facing a devastating personal situation due to an abusive contractor, and needs our help.

In August 2021 during the Delta wave in Thailand, Solidarity Group accepted an order from a trusted individual to produce 40 thousand PPE suits for medical personnel. Recognizing the urgent need for work among the cooperative's 500 members, Manop borrowed a large sum from a lender in order to start the job. But after Solidarity Group provided the first half of the order to the contractor, the individual contractor disappeared, leaving no payment.

A legal case is currently pending. While they wait, Manop is on the run from informal money lenders, moving from house to house on a regular basis. Meanwhile, Solidarity Group is facing a financial crisis, and unable to distribute work orders to the home-based garment workers who rely on it. Its long-term survival is threatened.

Solidarity Group wants to make up part of their loss, while providing the remaining 20,000 gowns to Thai medical facilities and communities.
