Support me to study at university.

I am Ms. Naw Merida Thaw. I grew up in Karen State and live with my family in a small village near Myawaddy city. I have five members of my family and I am a middle sibling. Currently, my parents live in Myanmar, and they are farmers. They are taking care of my brother because my youngest brother was born with a medical condition known as down syndrome. I attended a local primary school with my sister in my village with other friends from our village. After completing my primary school, my sister and I have to stop studying for one year due to the severe illness of my father, who needed blood transfusion as a part of his medical treatment. So, the severity of his illness led both my sister and I to quit our schooling.

A year later, I resumed my study at a nearby village called Htee Wah Klaet village where I completed my middle school. There, I met many friends including a rich but kind friend who is very nice to me. She helped me in any possible way to finish my study. In 2017, my best friend and I both graduated grade 12 at Hsa Thoo Lei Learing Center in Mae Sot, a border town in Thailand. We are not living together anymore but we still keep in touch and miss each other like before.

Hobbies

When I was a child, I wanted to be doctor, teacher and even policeman. However, as I get older, I realized that I wanted to be a teacher since I love to be around children, and they make my days lighter just by being around them. Loving children is not the only reason I want to be a teacher. I also see a big gap in my village and surrounding villages where the scarcity of teachers is growing highly significant. We hardly have any young people who want to teach in the villages. Education is not the only issue I encounter in my village, but I think engaging in education as a teacher could make a good cause to the community where I come from.

Additionally, my desire to become a teacher stemmed from my first-hand experience at my village. Sometimes when I visited my village, I bought snacks for children in my village and played games with them. When people ask about my future, I told them teaching is my future career. My parents also played a big role in my desire to become a teacher. Since I was a little girl until now, my parents are very supportive about my education. I remembered once my parents said, “Education is your life. We don’t have any valuable property to give you. But we can only encourage you to try tour best in your study”. The words might sound simple, but it still motivates me up until these days.

Currently challenge.

Everyone has their biggest challenge to pursue their studies. Like many, I could not pursue my further study at university without financial support. That is why I am here to apply for suitable scholarship to continue my further study. Economic hardship face by people in my village, including my parents, is also another challenge that delaying me from pursuing my further study. Now, my brother, who needs a proper care from my parent, is staying with my parents, my sister is studying and I’m teaching. Since my parents cannot financially support all of us at the same time, I’m now teaching at Hsa Thoo Lei School and preparing myself to pursue my further study. I now can look after my family from my small earnings from the teaching. I must take care of them when they are sick and when they need something. I also have a part time job and I do self-study after my work time. I have been doing it for almost five years.

Study Major: English communication Art

Studying B.A in English for International Communication will not only benefit me but also
the community where I later will serve. As mentioned in the first essay, my plan is to become
a teacher and serve the community where I came from. Studying English will not disturb me
from becoming a teacher and instead it will strengthen me to have the English skill and apply
them in my teaching. By having the English skill from the university, I can make use the skill
to teach children from my village and surrounding villages. In fact, English is regarded as the
most useful skill in my country. Thus, I can be a teacher, English teacher to be precise, and
teach the children who want to continue their studies abroad.

To sum up, poverty and education deprivation in my area are ones of the many issues that
drive me to pursue my further study. Furthermore, I think teaching alone will not solve the
problem. So, adding my knowledge in English skills by studying English in International
Communication will enable to me to serve the children from my community more effectively.
I foresee the children who will study with me not only finish their study in the country and
stop. I want them to study abroad and see things outside of the country where were born.
