Dear friends and supporters,

We are reaching out to you in an emergency fundraising campaign to help our colleague and journalist and chief for Than Lwin Khet News, Som Chai. Som Chai has been an advocate for human rights in Myanmar for many years, and his journalistic work has put him at risk of threats to his security and well-being. The most recent threat he is facing is a medical condition that requires urgent surgery to prevent further complications.

Som Chai has been experiencing pain in his abdomen area, which has been diagnosed as multiple gallstones in his gallbladder. This medical condition is a direct result of his work as a media professional, as he has faced harsh living conditions while conducting journalist workshops in Myanmar’s liberated areas in the jungle as well as in Mae Sot, Thailand. Despite the challenges he has faced, Som Chai has remained committed to his cause and continued to work for the betterment of his country and his fellow citizens.

The specialist has recommended that Som Chai undergo an operation as soon as possible to prevent infection, and the estimated cost of the surgery is around 250,000 THB (equivalent to 7,500 USD). Unfortunately, Som Chai and his colleagues only have 100,000 THB (equivalent to 3,000 USD) in private funds to contribute towards the cost of the surgery. Therefore, we urgently need your support to help cover the remaining costs of the surgery.

The surgery has been scheduled for 20 May 2023, and Som Chai will need to attend future appointments for follow-up care. These appointments will also incur additional medical expenses, which we will need to cover. We will keep you informed of any future medical appointments and associated costs, as we continue to work towards ensuring Som Chai receives the necessary medical care and support he needs.

Som Chai has dedicated his life to advocating for human rights and promoting responsible journalism in Myanmar.
