Hello dear lovely people,

We have decided to set-up this fundraiser for an old activist friend who is currently going through a very hard time in his life.

Our beloved friend has been working as a human rights activist for the indigenous peoples of Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT), Bangladesh for decades. Recently, the current Bangladeshi government started criminalizing all the human rights defenders working for the indigenous peoples of CHT. Few months ago, a couple of baseless charges were made against our friend -- which forced him to flee his hometown Rangamati overnight leaving his family behind.

Although he managed to escape arrest and found himself a safe place, right now he is economically and mentally struggling a lot! Just a few days ago, his family members (his wife and 2 years old child) from Rangamati were able to join him; but without any income source, currently they are living a very stressful life. The family does not even have enough money to buy some baby food for their child. Hence we decided to set up this fundraiser to give comfort and to ease some of the burden off their shoulders. If you would like to assist with this financial burden, any donations would be greatly appreciated.

For those of you who do not know about CHT and its context, it is located in the southeast of Bangladesh, bordering Rakhaine state of Myanmar and Northeast India. The area is home to 13 distinct indigenous groups who are collectively known as Jumma people. Since the inception of Bangladesh, the Jumma people have been demanding constitutional recognition of their distinct identity and history, which every successive governments repeatedly denied. To suppress the justified demand of the Jumma, in the mid 1970s the Bangladesh government started heavily militarizing the area. Consequently, in response, the Jumma organized an armed resistance movement. In the name of counterinsurgency operations, the military carried out a few massacres on the Jumma people and transferred half a million non-indigenous Bengali people in CHT to change the demography of the area. The armed conflict ended in 1997 after the government signed a peace agreement with the Jumma political party PCJSS. However, until now, the government has not implemented major clauses of the accord. CHT still continues to be one of the most militarized areas in the world, and human rights violation in the area goes unabated. Activists who have been demanding full implementation of the accord have been criminalized and prosecuted, and many of them even been killed.
