Taipride 2023 - Intersectionality

Nitinan Ngamchaipisit or Timmy, identifies as a Non-Binary Transgender and gender fluid. I am the founder of SAGA Thailand, a prominent social media group that serves as a community hub for sharing news and experiences within the LGBTIQAN+ communities in Thailand and abroad.

As a dedicated advocate for the rights and well-being of the LGBTIQAN+ communities, Timmy collaborates with various groups to raise awareness and provide support. Their involvement spans organizing events for Non-Binary individuals, Transmasculine, Intersex Thailand, and Pattaya Pride International since 2017. Furthermore, Timmy serves as a counselor for Non-Binary Thailand, where they offer advice and support on gender issues, policy-making, knowledge building, and event management.

Project Mission

The Taipride event is a celebration of Thai culture and the diverse identities of those living in Thailand. It serves as a platform for small and marginalized civil society organizations (CSOs) in Thailand to raise their voices, find empowerment, and take pride in their identities despite facing intersectional discrimination, oppression, and threats. Taipride provides a safe space for individuals who do not conform to mainstream gender and sexual norms or lack emotional support, allowing them to express themselves and connect with the wider LGBTIQAN+ community through various activities.

Additionally, the Taipride event aims to showcase the power of equality and human rights movements in Thailand to the general public. While most participating organizations are small CSOs, the collaboration among these organizations strengthens and empowers not only the LGBTIQAN+ movement but also other marginalized movements based on abilities, ethnicities, religious minorities, and gender identities. By fostering a sense of belonging and warmth within marginalized communities, Taipride plays a pivotal role in mobilizing a powerful movement for social change.

It is worth noting that we have successfully organized Taipride events for the past four years, starting in 2019. This demonstrates our experience, commitment, and dedication to creating an inclusive and empowering event that uplifts the voices and experiences of marginalized communities in Thailand.

Through Taipride, we aim to create an environment where diversity is celebrated, prejudices are challenged, and solidarity is fostered among various marginalized communities.

The Objective

1. Create a Safe and Inclusive Space: Taipride aims to collaborate with small CSOs in Thailand to establish a safe and inclusive environment where individuals from the LGBTIQAN+ community can freely express themselves. Through panel discussions and talks, Taipride provides a platform for diverse voices to be heard, fostering an atmosphere of acceptance and understanding.

2. Amplify Intersectional Voices: Taipride recognizes the intersectional experiences faced by LGBTIQAN+ individuals due to factors such as ethnicity, status, ability, and religion. By providing a space for intersectional voices to be raised and heard, Taipride seeks to highlight the unique challenges faced by marginalized communities within the LGBTIQAN+ spectrum.

3. Raise Awareness and Educate the Mainstream: As a civil society event, Taipride aims to educate the broader Thai society about the issues faced not only by LGBTIQAN+ individuals but also the intersections they encounter. Through engaging activities and discussions, Taipride seeks to increase understanding and empathy, promoting social inclusion and respect.

4. Encourage Dialogue and Advocacy: Taipride serves as a platform for marginalized communities, irrespective of age, to speak up and voice their concerns in a safe and non-judgmental space. By fostering dialogue and advocacy, Taipride empowers individuals to advocate for their rights and contribute to broader social change.

Overall, Taipride aims to create a transformative event that not only provides a sense of pride and belonging for LGBTIQAN+ individuals but also serves as a catalyst for societal change, promoting inclusivity, understanding, and respect for all.

Main Taipride Event

Panel Discussions:

1. Sapphic, Trans Lesbian, Intersex, Queer, and Non-Binary Experiences: Experts and community members will engage in insightful discussions, sharing their experiences and shedding light on unique challenges and triumphs within these identities.

2. LGBTIQAN+ Elderly Healthcare: This session will focus on addressing the healthcare needs and challenges faced by older LGBTIQAN+ people, providing valuable information and support.

3. Transmasculine Identities and Cultural Identity in Thailand: Exploring the intersection of transmasculine experiences and cultural identities, this session will promote understanding and celebrate diversity within the Thai context.

4.  Exhibition and Arts:The Empowerment Exhibition will showcase empowering stories, art, and achievements of women, queer, intersex, transwomen, and non-binary. This exhibition aims to celebrate their strength, resilience, and significant contributions to society. Additionally, an Arts Performance will feature creative expressions, performances, and artistic displays, further empowering participants and promoting artistic expression as a form of self-empowerment.

Conclusion

Taipride serves as a catalyst for positive change, fostering inclusivity, empowerment, and understanding within our community. Through panel discussions, talks, and engaging activities, this event will create a safe space for marginalized communities, including the LGBTIQAN+ individuals, to express themselves and raise their voices. It aims to inspire dialogue, promote acceptance, and educate the broader society about the challenges faced by these communities.
