Appeal by a Ugandan student to complete his graduate studies in Thailand

Accommodation and Food (necessities) for a Ugandan Student in Thailand

Greetings! My name is Francis Walugembe. I find myself in a difficult situation, for which I respectfully request your help.  I was accepted into a “fully funded”  PhD Public Health program at Walailak University in January,2023; however, the start date was postponed to August, 2023. Unfortunately, I came early to start the program, not realizing that only my studies will be covered when I become an official student in August.  In addition, they cannot allow me  to stay in the dormitory until August when I register officially as a student. Again, I have no funds to pay for accommodation when August comes.

The university explained that “Fully funded” does not include living expenses, scholastic materials and health insurance fees.  In Thailand, holders of student visas are absolutely not allowed to work and may face penalties up to deportation.

Based on the above, I ask your kind assistance to help me provide for my basic needs. Specifically, a safe place to stay; bus and train transportation; food for the duration of the program (2023-2026).

Currently, I volunteer with Bangkok Community Help Foundation (BCHF)doing manual labor sorting donations or assisting in the packaging and distribution of meals to the very poor and homeless.  However, I am a qualified Science, English and Maths teacher.  Sometimes, I am invited as a substitute teacher, for which I am paid 1000 Baht for the day.  Unfortunately, this does not happen too often.  This is how I survive.  Sometimes, when I volunteer or find something to do, a well-wisher might help with transport and lunch that day and I am grateful. I am currently staying at All Day Hostel Sukhumvit Bangkok where I pay 200 Baht per day.  I humbly request your support and compassion.  It would alleviate this situation so that I will be able to focus on my studies and make a contribution in the public health space as a qualified epidemiologist when I graduate.

How will you know how your contributions are being spent? I promise to be accountable.  If requested, I will post rent receipts, and receipts for everything major purchase, or a spreadsheet of actual expenses for each month.  I did not list clothing in my necessities because second hand clothing can be found at very cheap prices.  I am willing to be responsible and held accountable for your generous help. Your contribution will make a significant difference in my life.

May God bless you.
