Thailand Manta Project
Through multi-faceted research the Thailand Manta Project is working to shed light on Thailand’s manta populations, and the threats that are impacting them. Using photo-identification methods and field observations this project is building a comprehensive database of individual manta rays, allowing manta distribution to be mapped across Thailand’s waters. Over time, this data will enables us to make an estimation of population size and highlight trends in behaviour, movements, life history and identify areas of critical habitat use. We work closely with and engage local communities, businesses and the Thai government, to help raise awareness on the ecological and economic importance of protecting manta rays and their habitat. The project’s fundamental goal is to create value for living manta rays as a sustainable natural resource for the tourism industry.

The Story

Hi,

I am Jamie, I am the project leader of Thailand Manta Project. I am willing to chop off my hair to raise fund for our manta rays research. The fund will be used to purchase our main research tool, a new underwater camera gear!

How important is an underwater camera for our research? Because each individual manta ray can be identified by unique spot patterns on their belly (similar to our fingerprint), we collect database of the manta populations using photos and videos that show these markings. Camera has been our main research tool and had helped the manta rays getting better protection in Thailand last year! But our work continues as there are still so much we don't know about these gentle giants, and in order to protect something we first need to understand it.

I have been using my personal cameras (or more like 3 of them) in the past 5 years, sadly, the cameras have given up on me and we are in need of a new camera set. Please help donate to help us protect and keep the manta rays in Thai waters. Thank you :)

Keep up the great work to save the beautiful playful Oceanics in Thailand. They gave me so many beautiful dives already, always deeply grateful if one of them appears in front of my mask
