Defibs4Samui
Defibs4Samui aims to supply 15 defibs (heart defibrillators) to all public
emergency vehicles on the tropical island of Koh Samui, Thailand.
Today there is only 1 defib in the 16 public vehicles which are despatched when
the Medical Emergency number 1669 is called.
Samui Rescue is a volunteer medical emergency organisation, which is first on the scene in 95% of emergency calls, with an average arrival time of 4 minutes. They respond to all emergency situations, such as motorbike and car accidents, heart attacks, drownings etc. Samui Rescue has 10 emergency vehicles stationed in 5 locations around the island. None of them have a defib.
Koh Samui Hospital, in the town of Nathon is the only government hospital on the
island, and the other provider of public medical emergency services. It has 6
ambulances, but just 1 defib!
Defibs4Samui will donate the highly rated HeartSine samaritan PAD 350P.
HeartSine will donate a free defib to Samui when one of their machines is used to
save a life.
Bangkok Hospital will provide certified CPR and defib training to all Rescue
Teams. Follow up training will be conducted every 4 months by a qualified RLSA
instructor. A defib is a lightweight, portable device that delivers an electric shock through the chest to the heart. For a person experiencing sudden cardiac arrest, this shock has an impressive 70% success rate in saving a life, when used in conjunction with CPR.
Koh Samui is home to over seventy thousand people and 3 million international tourists per year (pre-covid). Defibs4Samui is addressing the urgent need for these life saving machines to be accessible to all residents and visitors.
Many long term residents, expats and tourists are unaware of the Emergency Call numbers on Samui. In conjunction with Defibs4Samui, an information campaign will permanently promote the emergency contact numbers and procedures to all.
Prizes shall be offered to all major donors. Watch this page for prize information
and regular updates.
Defibs4Samui fundraising target is 750,000 Baht for 15x 45,000 Baht defibs, plus
75,000 baht for training, billboards, posters and ancillary costs.

We have just purchased the first defib for the Samui Emergency Rescue Team thanks to a generous donation by Vicki Spencer-Francis.
Vicki first visited Thailand in 2002 and on her most recent visit this year she learnt about the shortage of defibrillators on the island and Rotary’s Defibs4Samui campaign.
Thailand has made a profound impression on Vicki and she wanted to do what she could to support local people and ultimately save lives.
With over 25 years working in television and charity sector in the UK, Vicki set up her own PR and Marketing agency called Cowshed in Cardiff, Wales in 2013. Since then she has worked with clients including Macmillan Cancer Support, United Nations Refugee Agency, Welsh Government and many other purpose driven causes.
If you would like to dedicate a defib to someone you love (including yourself :-) message us for more details.
UPDATE
Shane Warne’s Samui Tailor Donates cashmere wool suit to Defibs4Samui
Shane Warne’s Samui tailor has generously donated a tailor made cashmere wool suit to the first person who donates 100,000 baht or more to Defibs4Samui.
Brioni Tailors on Choeng Mon Beach Road, will consult with the winner anywhere in the world to meet all their style requirements, for a custom made jacket and trousers made of cashmere wool. The winner may also select from the Shane Warne memorial collection of fabrics and styles.
Brioni’s tailor Parsuram Panday said “I feel very emotional about this cause because I got to know Shane Warne from repeated garment consultations and fittings, and he visited my shop just hours before he passed away. The wonderful Rescue Team were the first on the scene to help him, and I would like to donate a suit to this fundraiser to help our community. I have already had 2 Australian fans buy garments in the same fabric and cut in which Shane ordered them. They wanted a personal way of remembering and honoring him.”
Parsuram was shocked by Warne’s death. “I couldn’t believe that I was speaking with him just a few hours earlier. “When he came into the shop he was so happy, strong and full of life and energy. He said, ‘Long time no see, Parsuram’ and laughed.‘It’s great to see you’ and he patted me on the back.”
Parsuram said: “I love cricket and Shane Warne was a hero of mine. It was a great privilege to make his suits.”
This suit prize will be granted to the first person who donates 100,000 baht or more to Defibs4Samui. They shall be notified by Rotary and connected with Brioni Taylors.
