Helping a Stray Cat Who Was Bitten and Diagnosed with Leukemia

2145

The Story

The cat is a stray, about 5-6 months old, living with its siblings near my workplace. Normally, the guesthouse owner and I have been giving food and water to the whole family for months. We’ve tried to find a home for this kitten, but no one has adopted it. On October 4th, the kitten came to our workplace crying loudly, shaking, and refusing to eat, so we decided to take it to the vet.

The vet discovered that the kitten had a bite wound on its side, which seemed to be about a week old, and it had a high fever of 105.8°F. A blood test revealed that the kitten's blood levels were very poor, and it was diagnosed with leukemia (FeLV). We decided to admit the kitten to the hospital for treatment for both the wound and its other conditions, including fluids and medication.

On October 7th, after the IV fluids were removed, the vet ran another blood test. There were both improvements and setbacks. The improvements were in the white blood cell and platelet counts, which started to normalize, but the kitten became more anemic, and the inflammation and infection in its body worsened. The kitten will need continuous treatment, including repeat blood tests and wound care every other day for about two weeks.

As of now, the medical expenses from October 4th to October 8th total 3,420 baht. The vet estimates that if the kitten needs to stay for another two weeks, the costs will range from 2,500 to 3,500 baht. The total amount required for its treatment will be around 5,920 - 6,920 baht.

We cannot bring the kitten back right away because it has a high chance of spreading the virus to its siblings and mother. While the kitten is being treated, we are also trying to find homes for the other stray cats to reduce the risk as much as possible. Thank you for your helping.
