On Tuesday, March 11, my 74-year-old dad woke up with an uneasy feeling—as if something was wrong. He initially brushed it off as a minor illness, expecting only a slight cold or a few days of discomfort. However, as the day went on, his condition worsened. My mother, sensing that something was off, decided to stay awake a little longer instead of going to sleep early as she usually would.
That night, while my mother was waiting, she heard a faint, unusual sound coming from the toilet. Driven by a gut feeling, she went to check and discovered a scene no one could have expected: my dad was lying on the ground, unconscious and barely dressed.
Panicked yet determined, my mother woke him up and tried to help him get dressed, insisting that he must go to the hospital immediately. As she attempted to put his shorts on, my dad cried out in excruciating pain—he couldn’t bear the pressure. Fearing that his fall might have caused more severe damage, especially given his age, she immediately called for an ambulance.
After a tense wait, the ambulance arrived. Although the crew initially planned to take him to the nearest hospital outside Chiang Mai, my mother refused that option, knowing it wouldn’t be equipped to handle his critical state. Instead, she insisted he be taken to a better facility—in the end, the Bangkok Hospital in Chiang Mai became his destination.
Shortly after arriving, even before any tests could be performed, the doctors noticed his heart rate was dangerously high. They explained that they had used electricity to nearly stop / stop his heart in order to readjust his rate back to normal. Unfortunately, due to the language barrier, I wasn’t able to fully understand all the details. What I do know is that further examinations revealed alarming injuries: his kidneys are failing, his lungs are filled with blood, his heart is in a critical state, and he had broken his hip joint—explaining why he couldn’t even tolerate the simple act of getting dressed.
At this moment, my father is stabilized as much as possible, but he remains in a precarious, critical condition. Due to his advanced age, he has struggled to maintain decent insurance coverage in Thailand. With external insurance options proving too costly, he even had to cancel his existing policy in a desperate bid to save money and seek a more affordable solution.
Now, my mother is fighting day by day to gather the funds needed to cover his mounting hospital bills—currently around 150,000 Thai baht per day while he remains in the emergency facility (and this rate may drop once he’s transferred to a normal ward, though the staff are very cautious about discussing exact numbers).
Meanwhile, I, his son, am desperately trying to raise enough money to ensure his continued care and survival.
I’m reaching out with a humble plea for help. I don’t expect anyone to cover the full amount or even a full day’s bill on their own, but every little bit will help ease the enormous financial burden on our family. I promise that once our situation stabilizes, I will do everything in my power to repay any assistance provided—even if it takes years.
Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for any support you can offer in helping save my dad’s life.
