Please help my Thai niece who has HIV

1405

The Story

I am a 'farang' man.  The young women in the photo is my Thai niece.  She is 18 years old.  I have known her and I have helped to look after her since she was 2 years old.

One year ago, she was pregnant.  The maternity test at the hospital showed that she was HIV positive.  She has never worked in the entertainment industry.  She worked hard at school.

My niece was offered HIV medicine by the hospital, but she refused this because she thought (wrongly) that it would harm her unborn child.  After the baby was born (healthy), she forgot about the HIV diagnosis, because she was still healthy.  She and her family did not understand how serious and deadly this disease can be.

Now, 9 months later,  it is a different matter.  She is very thin and weak, but it is still possible for her to receive free treatment under the Thai 30-baht health scheme.

Why do I ask for 30,000 baht.  Although the medicine should be free, all other related expenses must be paid.  Her mother must stay in the same room to care for her night and day (she cannot walk or go to the toilet).  The hospital says that they must stay together in a private room, and that is not free.  Her mother cannot work at her job either.  As their uncle, I am trying to pay for all these things.  But I am a teacher, and teachers do not receive a high salary.

This young woman has her whole life in front of her.  It is possible (but not guaranteed of course), that she can recover from her illness and receive ongoing medication.  But I cannot promise the hospital money to pay the expenses when I have no money :(

If you are kind enough to donate to my cause, I will publish receipts of all the expenses that I have paid out with your donations.
