SEKAI HOTEL doesn’t force its brand, accommodation facilities, stores, and activities to fit in one big building, but rather focuses on reusing old buildings scattered about the town (in other words, a cloud of accommodation facilities) so that we can develop the entire town as a large hotel. We call this way of thinking the “cloud hotel.”

To be more specific, we renovate old buildings into guest rooms. We collaborate and partner with local businesses such as bathhouses, restaurants, and other facilities for various activities so that we provide our guests with a reason to go around the town.

Fading Japanese Local Lifestyle

Japan is increasing its popularity as an international tourist destination with the help of easing visa requirements as well as the rising anime and manga fandom. The number of foreign visitors to Japan has increased by 3.4 times in the last 10 years from 8.4 million to 28.7 million people. The Japanese government is expecting 40 million visitors annually by the Tokyo Olympics in 2020.

Many urban areas in Japan are being redeveloped with the increase in the number of tourists. The quaint cafe where locals used to get together with their old time friends have turned into clean chain cafes, and bars that used to serve Japanese homemade dishes are being overtaken by cheap Japanese-style bars owned by major companies. The authentic Japanese lifestyle, which we call “Ordinary Japan Culture” is beginning to fade away due to urban development and redevelopment for tourism.

In the midst of all of that, SEKAI HOTEL takes value in tourists being able to get a deep cultural experience in the authentic Japanese lifestyle. It might be more comfortable to go to familiar chain stores on overseas trips on your first time in a new country. However, we believe that the excitement and the essence of traveling abroad are in the memories you make at traditional and local stores trying to communicate in gestures and broken languages. A New Base Opened at a Shopping Street in Fuse, Osaka

SEKAI HOTEL opened its second location, SEKAI HOTEL Fuse, this September at a shopping street in Fuse, Osaka.

A shopping street is a street lined with many stores.  Japan saw an increase in the number of shopping street about 50 years ago. They serve as the “face of the town,” conducting business at one of the best locations in the area. They also take a central role in invigorating the local community by holding festivals, contributing to the people as a “place” for building a community.

The Fuse shopping street, extending to the south and north of the station is about 50 years old, lined with fruit and vegetable stores, octopus ball stores, stores that serve freshly fried croquettes, and butcher’s. Despite some stores reaching over 100 years old, more stores are closing just as they are in other shopping streets due to the declining birthrate and the lack of people who are willing to take over the business. SEKAI HOTEL Fuse focuses on the Fuse shopping street and the traditional Japanese lifestyle that stems from there. By including the tour of the shopping street into the accommodation allows guests to get a local experience of the town.

Fuse is easily accessible—a single bus ride from the Kansai International Airport and a single train ride to famous sightseeing spots such as USJ, Dotonbori, and Nara.

Closing Remarks
